A dramatic scene unfolded at the Memphis Zoo when an ape unexpectedly charged at visitors, resulting in a shattered glass enclosure.

According to zoo officials, the bonobo’s reaction may have been provoked by unruly behavior from onlookers.

In a conversation with Action News 5, the individual who filmed the event explained that he and his companions were playfully “beating their chests” near the enclosure, never anticipating such a response. This incident took place on February 26.

The zoo reassured the public that the bonobo habitat is designed with several layers of reinforced glass, and only one inner pane was affected.

Following the incident, the exhibit was temporarily closed to repair the glass, prompting the zoo to stress the need for courteous behavior from visitors.

“Disruptive actions at exhibits not only cause physical damage but also significantly impact the animals’ routines and wellbeing,” the Memphis Zoo communicated via social media. “We encourage families and guests of all ages to show respect during their visits. This means avoiding actions like pounding on glass, yelling at, or taunting animals, and staying clear of exhibit barriers.”

The bonobo was not injured, and no guests were harmed.
