Police said it all started when officers saw a wanted man, armed with a knife, in the 0-100 block of West Hubbard Street.
“I saw a guy with a knife on him and then five, four, six cops chasing him from the tunnel or the other street over there. I heard, ‘drop the knife, drop the knife’ multiple times. I was, I don’t know, 10 feet away from them,” said Pedro Priori, a witness who was talking to his bus stop.
The man fled from officers, who chased him into the hotel, police said. Officers deployed Tasers, but police said they were not effective.
Police said the man disregarded officers’ directions and turned toward them, still holding the knife. Two officers then fired shots, striking him.
A man was critically injured in a River North shooting involving Chicago police near 30 East Hubbard Street, outside the Courtyard Marriott on Monday.
“I heard a Taser gun going off, I don’t know, 30 seconds later, four, five shots, and then dozens of police show up from all over the place,” Priori said.
Another witness, who was inside the hotel, also heard the commotion.
“I was sitting closest to the door that goes out to the hallway, and I heard some arguing. I heard a man’s voice and some things slamming around, and it didn’t sound like something fell. It sounded like there was an escalation or an argument, and then, a couple minutes later, I heard gunshots,” said Christine Alwahab.
Officers rendered aid to the man, who was transported to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition, police said.
ABC7 cameras were on the scene when he was taken away on a stretcher.
Two officers were taken to the hospital for observation, per protocol.
CPD recovered a weapon on the scene.
The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating.
