The iconic shirt from the Material Girl era holds a significant place in the legacy of this soccer team, and they’re eager to reclaim it.
Spanish soccer club Celta Vigo recently reached out to Madonna regarding the sky-blue jersey she famously wore over 30 years ago. Her response to the club’s request was both open-hearted and a bit perplexing.
Back in 1990, during her Blonde Ambition tour, Madonna performed at Celta Vigo’s Balaidos Stadium. She sported a soccer jersey in the team’s colors with the number 5, honoring their then-defender, the late Jose Manuel Espinosa.

This Wednesday, the club’s president, Marián Mouriño Terrazo, addressed an open letter to the pop icon on X, inquiring about the shirt’s current location. They expressed interest in preserving it within their club’s historical collection.
“Do you still have it? If you know where it might be or wish to aid us in tracking it down, please reach out via private message,” Terrazo requested.
“Though it wasn’t the only football jersey you showcased on stage, over time, its significance has grown. We now realize what you stood for back then: challenging norms and defying those who dictate boundaries. At our club, we resonate with that spirit. Thus, our quest for this garment is more than a mere pursuit; it’s an act of remembrance, an emotional legacy for our club.”

On Saturday, the songtress replied to the inquiry, with an X post that said, “This shirt is hanging in my archives! I am wearing and representing your team in spirit!!”
Fans commented on the fact that the seven-time Grammy winner — who is the best-selling female music artist of all time — didn’t actually respond to the team’s request.
“So … this means that you’re giving the shirt back? It’s confusing,” one asked.
“Classy … but she is not giving it back!” one quipped.
