Production of the “Tomb Raider” series has been temporarily paused following a “minor injury” sustained by Sophie Turner.
WASHINGTON — Sophie Turner, the actress tasked with reviving the iconic character Lara Croft for television, suffered an injury during filming. As a result, production, which kicked off in January, has been put on hold for the time being, according to various reports.
Amazon MGM Studios issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly, saying, “Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.”
Details regarding the nature of the injury, how it occurred, or any further specifics have not been disclosed at this moment.
The US Sun suggested that Turner had a “pre-existing back injury” that was exacerbated while filming.
Earlier, Prime Video announced that production began in Los Angeles in January. Fans were also treated to a first look at Turner channeling the “Game of Thrones” star in full Lara Croft attire, complete with the character’s classic green tank top, black shorts, and red sunglasses.
Turner will lead Prime Video’s new TV adaptation of the popular video game franchise. The show, created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, will also feature Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie and August Wittgenstein.
The TV series will follow the adventures of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft. There is no release date for the project at this time.
Turner is the newest star to take hold of the “Tomb Raider” mantle, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. Jolie starred in the first movie adaptation, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” and its sequel, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life.”
Vikander played Lara Croft in the 2018 film “Tomb Raider.”
“I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got,” Turner said in a previous statement. “They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
