Bronzeville nursing home Southview Manor set to lose Medicare, Medicaid funding, at risk of closing

CHICAGO (WLS) — A South Side nursing home is at risk of closing this weekend after years of complaints and violations.

A new report details several cases ranging from lagging responses to assault at the Southview Manor in Bronezville.

The facility is now set to lose its funding from Medicare and Medicaid.

The nursing home will no longer be part of the Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement program starting Saturday. This decision comes from the federal government following numerous allegations of abuse and neglect.

Complaints about Southview Manor have been ongoing for years, leading to the Bronzeville facility, with a 200-bed capacity located in the 3300 block of South Michigan, facing the discontinuation of federal reimbursement.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, in a public notice, stated that the facility “has failed to attain substantial compliance” with nearly a dozen requirements. These requirements include areas such as “Quality of Life,” “Quality of Care,” “Food and Nutrition Services,” and ensuring “Freedom from Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation.”

The agency gave Southview its lowest possible rating, citing 39 health complaints in the past three years that resulted in citations.

According to CMS, over 43% of the facility’s long-term residents were administered antipsychotic medication, which is more than twice the average for nursing homes in Illinois. The agency also detailed several instances of violence occurring at the facility.

In a reported incident from November last year, a fight ensued between two male residents following an alleged sexual assault of a disoriented female resident, who was on medication, by one of the men in her room.

CMS found no changes were made to protect that woman, and the alleged attacker was allowed to remain on her same floor.

Attempts by ABC7 to reach out to nursing home management for comments went unanswered, and a staff member at Southview told ABC7 that the facility had no comment regarding the situation.
