In a heartwarming gesture just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, families in Bronzeville were treated to free turkeys, bringing smiles and a sense of relief as they prepared for their festive meals.

This charitable event was organized by The Kindness Campaign in collaboration with Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles. Their joint effort culminated in a food drive on Sunday morning, designed to ensure that families in the area had everything necessary for a memorable Thanksgiving feast.

Participants at the event were greeted with tables laden with fresh ingredients, allowing them to select items essential for their Thanksgiving dinners. This thoughtful setup provided families with the autonomy to choose what best suited their holiday needs.

One community member, Steve Shannon, expressed his gratitude and anticipation, stating, “I’m about to go home and thaw this turkey out, and see what to do.” His words captured the essence of the community spirit and the excitement of preparing a holiday meal.

The initiative successfully catered to the needs of 200 families, a feat made possible through the generosity of donors who contributed to the cause.

For those interested in extending their support, ABC7 Chicago has launched its annual Feed the Love campaign, offering an opportunity for more individuals to contribute to such impactful initiatives.

“I think a lot of people have planned to cut back when things are uncertain,” said Christopher Watts with the Kindness Campaign. “You typically do nothing and people are just saving, trying to save money because they don’t know how far they’re going to have to make dollars last.”

That uncertainty is being felt by many SNAP recipients who had their benefits temporarily paused during the longest ever government shutdown.

“It means a lot, what we have been going through the past month due to government shutdown,” Jahkira Pipins said. “When I do hear about good pantries, I am up and trying to support my family by getting food.”

Any little bit of help is making a big difference for the families.
