SJSO weighs in on Meta's new safety features for teen accounts

Understanding the latest enhancements to parental controls on teen accounts is crucial, especially as these updates could support future police investigations.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Keeping track of teenagers’ social media activities has become more manageable. Meta has unveiled a series of new measures aimed at strengthening the supervision of adolescent users.

As the parent entity of Facebook and Instagram, Meta has introduced significant updates to empower parents and educators in safeguarding teen users.

In recent weeks, the tech behemoth has implemented an array of enhanced safety features for teen accounts. These improvements include filtering out content unsuitable for individuals under 13 and initiating a school partnership program that enables educators to report safety issues more swiftly involving their students.

The revisions in Meta’s algorithm for younger audiences are designed to reduce prolonged exposure to online threats and enable moderators to act more promptly in incidents of cyberbullying or school-related dangers, potentially averting situations that require police intervention.

Cybercrimes Lieutenant Christopher Collins of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office highlights that many parents lack awareness of who their children interact with in the digital world.

“It’s about setting boundaries, setting limits,” he said. “You’re not just exposing your children to the world, you’re exposing the world to your children when you give them access to these devices. And that’s terrifying.”

Collins adds that, in his experience, many harassment cases don’t start or end at school. These issues often follow children home through social media, gaming and streaming platforms, interfering with a child’s everyday life.

The additional regulations for teen accounts and using AI to identify suspected teens attempting to bypass restrictions by registering as adults could make a significant difference in cyberbullying or predator investigations.

“Knowing who is communicating with whom, and then having the algorithm identify accounts that are deceiving about their age, creating fake accounts, and pretending to be teenagers when they’re actually adults, helps us tremendously,” Collins said. “For example, someone might say they’re 35, but they’re holding conversations like they’re 15.”

Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to identify posts or conversations that contain trigger words, which alert moderators to potential threats.

In Florida, police are able to respond to online threats as if they were real-world criminal investigations, whether they occur on social media or gaming platforms.

Collins also notes that parents can adjust how much control they have over their child’s account through Instagram or Facebook settings. He hopes other platforms popular with teens will adopt similar safety protocols.
