TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Extra law enforcement will be patrolling the waters to make sure people are celebrating safely over the Fourth of July weekend.

This year marks the 17th anniversary of Operation Dry Water, an initiative where local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies collaborate to prevent boating under the influence.

Boating is popular year-round in Florida, but especially over the Independence holiday weekend.

Law enforcement said, rain or shine, boaters need to stay sober on the water.

Clearwater Coastguard Auxiliary Captain, Karen Miller, said Operation Dry Water is all about education and the importance of boating safely.

“We might be somewhat thankful for the weather, as it will likely discourage many from associating the thrill of boating with consuming alcohol,” stated Captain Miller.

Miller said last year, there were 556 boating deaths across the country.

“556 deaths is actually less than there were before, in 50 years, actually,” Miller said.

With extra law enforcement patrolling, sobriety checkpoints, and educational classes, the hope is to prevent anyone from losing their life.

“Share real-life incidents involving individuals who have been injured or have lost their lives. It’s not just one tragedy we’re discussing; it extends further. These individuals have families—brothers, sisters, parents, children, and grandchildren,” Miller explained.
