Stony Brook women's lacrosse team looking to make more history

The Stony Brook Seawolves are cruising towards victory with confidence.

With an impressive record of 11-2, the women’s lacrosse team is setting its sights on securing a fourth consecutive Coastal Athletic Association championship, as well as a 13th straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.

“Our goal is to reach the Final Four. That’s our aim every year,” head coach Joe Spallina shared with The Post.

This season, the Seawolves have only stumbled against two formidable opponents, No. 4 Northwestern and No. 9 Johns Hopkins. Meanwhile, they have claimed victories over a trio of nationally-ranked teams: No. 15 Colorado, No. 19 Denver, and No. 20 Princeton.

However, Coach Spallina emphasizes that the team’s performance in the latter part of the season will be crucial. Currently, they boast an unblemished 4-0 record within their conference.

“Securing home playoff games could create a more favorable path for us, making our goals more attainable,” Spallina remarked.

Taking another CAA title and making a deep run in the NCAA tournament would mean everything to the seasoned group, especially captain Isabella Caporuscio, a junior midfielder.

“Each year, we have our eyes on that same prize of winning that conference championship,” she said.

Caporuscio, who is nearing a 40-goal season, added that the team, especially the older athletes who’ve played together for years, is inseparable and that’s been a major contributor to the winning culture.

“Things that happen outside of lacrosse are really what build the chemistry between all of us,” she said.

“We work so hard every single day, and I think that [a fantastic finish] would mean everything to us.”

UBS Arena will host its first DI college hockey tournament at Christmastime this year, thanks to a new partnership with Long Island University, as the frozen fins will be the inaugural host of the Empire State Holiday Invitational on Dec. 28-29.
