Amarion Mitchell, aged 22, was critically injured with multiple gunshots during the incident at Westwood Apartments on May 26 and succumbed to his injuries days afterward in a nearby hospital, as reported by JSO.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A male suspect, already detained in the Duval County Jail, has been accused of additional charges, including second-degree murder, linked to a fatal shooting at an apartment complex on Jacksonville’s Westside last month, according to an announcement from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.
Muhammad Thomas, also 22 years old, is charged with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, discharging a weapon, or throwing deadly missiles, and tampering with evidence concerning the shooting, as indicated in the jail records.
Amarion Mitchell, 22, suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the May 26 shooting at Westwood Apartments, and was taken to a local hospital by members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department afterward in critical condition.
“Several days after the shooting, Mitchell died from his injuries in the hospital,” JSO said in a Facebook post. “He had just turned 22 years old earlier in the month.”
After JSO’s homicide detectives combed through evidence and interviewed people who may have been involved in the shooting, the sheriff’s office said detectives identified Thomas as the gunman in the shooting.
Records show Thomas was arrested on the day of the shooting for sexual battery stemming from a separate incident.
“We’ll work closely with our partners at the State Attorney’s Office to bring justice to Mitchell’s loved ones,” JSO’s post states.
