Federal authorities have announced the recapture of a murder suspect who was accidentally released from a California jail last year. Following a dramatic multi-state search, Isaiah Jamon Andrews was apprehended in St. Louis.

Andrews, aged 20, had been held at the Martinez Detention Facility in Contra Costa County. He was awaiting extradition to Washington state, facing charges related to a fatal shooting in Seattle.

The inadvertent release occurred on October 22 after Andrews was arrested in Antioch, California, under suspicion of murder. Jail officials mistakenly let him go, despite his association with the Seattle case.

At the time of his release, Andrews was also facing local charges and was wanted on a separate juvenile warrant from Sacramento, according to authorities.

The oversight was discovered too late, as Andrews had already disappeared. Seattle detectives, who were on their way to retrieve him, learned he was no longer in custody upon their arrival.

In the immediate aftermath of the release, deputies conducted a search around the jail vicinity, but it was swiftly concluded that Andrews had already left the area.

The discovery triggered an urgent search involving the US Marshals Service and multiple law enforcement agencies.

Andrews was tracked down Tuesday in St. Louis, Missouri, and taken back into custody without incident, according to the US Marshals Service, which worked with Seattle police to locate him.

He is now expected to be returned to Washington’s King County, where he will face murder investigation.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances behind Andrews’ release.
