Lionel Messi was the standout name as a recent study revealed which players were the most viewed on the internet in each country in 2023.

Fbref Stats gave fans an interesting insight as to which stars of the game were searched for or looked at online during the past calendar year.

And it was no surprise to see Messi dominate in the wake of the World Cup and his high-profile move from PSG to Inter Miami.

The Argentine made a brilliant start to life on the East Coast, scoring a number of memorable goals and helping his team win their first ever trophy.

Messi was also No 1 in China, India, South Africa, Germany, Ghana, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Holland, Egypt, Canada, Turkey and of course Argentina.

There was little sign of old rival Cristiano Ronaldo, whose name only appeared alongside his native Portugal.

Perhaps the most surprising result was that Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo was the player who led the way in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The midfielder was one of the stories of the summer transfer window as the blues beat Liverpool to secure his services.

The Reds had looked to have won the race before Chelsea beat them out with a British record fee of £115m.

Strangely, former Real Madrid star Guti was the most searched player in Colombia while it was Neymar for Brazil, Kylian Mbappe for France and Vinicius Junior for Spain.
