Birmingham man arrested on drug trafficking charges

NORTHPORT, Ala. (WIAT) — A teenager was arrested after a man was shot in Northport on Thursday.

Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit reported that a man who had been shot once arrived at the hospital with serious injuries around 11 p.m. on Thursday. The shooting took place in the 1900 block of Harper Road, where shell casings were discovered. This location is close to the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport.

Kennedy mentioned that a video indicated an automatic weapon was discharged. It was concluded that the pistol had been altered with a switch to enable automatic gunfire.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that Akari Morgan, 18, was involved in the shooting. He was apprehended on Friday and charged with violating the Glock switch act that Governor Kay Ivey enacted in March. Morgan’s bond was set at $25,000.

Kennedy stated issues of self-defense were raised. The shooting’s cause and motive are being investigated. Once an investigation is complete, the case will be presented to a grand jury for both parties involved. The grand jury will decide if there are additional charges.
