Chicago crime: 17-year-old suspect's weapon fires during struggle with police officers on West 71st Street in West Lawn, CPD says

In a tense encounter on Chicago’s Southwest Side, a firearm was discharged during an altercation involving police officers, according to authorities. The incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the arrest of two 17-year-olds.

The trouble began when a female victim reported that during a verbal dispute, a male suspect in a Chevrolet SUV brandished a gun at her. This alarming situation occurred around 3:36 p.m. on the 3700 block of West 71st Street, in the West Lawn neighborhood.

Responding to the victim’s call, Chicago police swiftly located the vehicle in question. The driver, a 17-year-old male, was apprehended without further incident. During the arrest, officers recovered a firearm from him.

However, the situation escalated when a second teenage suspect exited the vehicle and attempted to flee. In the process of apprehending this individual, officers found themselves in a struggle, during which a firearm hidden in the suspect’s clothing went off. Fortunately, the discharge did not result in any serious injuries.

The second suspect was subsequently taken into custody and transported to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. This incident highlights the challenges and potential dangers faced by law enforcement in their duty to protect and serve the community.

While trying to arrest the second teen, CPD officers struggled with the suspect, and a firearm that was concealed in his clothing was discharged, officials said. The offender was arrested and taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Charges are pending against the two 17-year-old suspects.

COPA is investigating, CPD said.

No further information was available.
