Sara Haines is still struggling to find privacy in her home two years after she said her young children have “absolutely” seen her “tatas.”
On this morning’s episode of The View, the ladies discussed what age parents should stop letting their children see them in the nude.
“My kids do not knock. We discuss privacy, but it’s often while I’m on the toilet with them right there,” Haines, mother of three with husband Max, shared.
The co-host clarified she’s not “running around nude,” but is usually applying “lotions” when her children burst into the bathroom. Though this approach may seem unusual to some parents, Haines shared why she doesn’t mind her children seeing her naked.
“I don’t want my kids to feel they need to cover up, especially as young children,” she explained. “I breastfed. My kids didn’t sexualize me, society did. They used to nurse at my breasts. Even now, they’ll ask questions, walk in, not staring at me, but talking about fights or hitting someone. I just say, ‘I’ll be out in a minute.’”
“But I don’t want them to feel ashamed of their bodies, either,” she continued. “I’m sure there’s a time that comes where it’s weird but I think you’ll feel that as a parent but right now there are no private doors.”
Meanwhile, Alyssa Farah Griffin thought it would be “traumatic” for pubescent kids to see their parents naked. And Sunny Hostin quoted a psychotherapist who claimed “you should not allow your kids to see you naked ages nine and up.”
Whoopi Goldberg, for her part, had some blunt advice for Haines.
“Knock on the door! Do not ever walk into any door before you knock,” she said. “You can get shocked. You can get hurt doing that. Knock on the door and see if someone gives you permission. This is 101.”
Haines then chimed in, “I welcome any training of my young children to get them to knock on the door,” to which Goldberg replied, “Send ‘em to my house. They’ll never walk in on you again!”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
