'The View' host blasts Chuck Schumer after Senate reaches deal to end government shutdown

Sunny Hostin, co-host of “The View,” offered a scathing critique of the Democratic Party and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, declaring that Schumer’s leadership was effectively finished. Her comments came on Monday following the decision by eight Democratic senators to align with Republicans on a government funding plan.

Hostin expressed her frustration by pointing out that the Republicans’ decision to cut Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies and reduce the size of the federal government was made without Democratic involvement. “I want an opposition party,” Hostin declared, emphasizing her belief that Democrats failed the American electorate by not taking a stronger stand. She shared her skepticism alongside co-host Whoopi Goldberg, doubting the Republicans’ willingness to negotiate sincerely.

Hostin continued her criticism by stating, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me multiple times, shame on me.” She accused Democrats of naively expecting Republicans to cooperate, a mistake she believes they have repeated too often.

She lamented the Democrats’ perceived capitulation following a significant electoral victory, urging the party to fight harder for working Americans. Hostin questioned Schumer’s ability to unite his caucus, suggesting that it might be time for new leadership if he cannot maintain cohesion. “Chuck Schumer — his days are over,” she asserted.

The eight senators who sided with Republicans in the funding vote included Angus King (I-Maine), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

Meanwhile, co-hosts Alyssa Farah Griffin and Sara Haines expressed support for ending the government shutdown, with Griffin describing the resolution as a “welcome decision.”

The co-hosts interviewed Schumer in March after he voted in favor of the GOP spending bill to fund the government through September, the end of the fiscal year.

Hostin scolded Schumer during the interview and accused him of “caving” at the time.

“It gives me no pleasure to say this to you, because we are friends, but I think you caved,” Hostin told Schumer. “I think you and nine other Democrats caved.”

“I don’t think you showed the fight that this party needs right now. Because you’re playing by a rulebook, where the other party has thrown that rulebook away,” she added.

Last month and this month, Schumer, along with most other Senate Democrats, voted against a continuing resolution that would fund the government several times as they sought an extension to the Obamacare subsidies.

The government has been shut down for 40 days, the longest shutdown in history.
