The Chromecast is back, but not as we know it

When Google decided to discontinue its compact Chromecast and replace it with the TV Streamer set-top box, the change wasn’t welcomed by everyone. For those longing for a new version of Google’s previous streaming device, the Thomson Cast 150 might be a suitable alternative — although it’s exclusively available in Europe.

The Cast 150 bears a striking resemblance to Google’s phased-out Chromecast, boasting a compact, flat white dongle equipped with a built-in HDMI cable. The software mirrors Google’s system, running on Google TV, and it supports Google’s video casting technology, promising a familiar user experience.

This device supports 4K visuals, along with HDR10 and Dolby Atmos audio. A potential limitation is the 8GB storage, which could be restrictive for users looking to install numerous apps. Some applications come pre-installed, such as Netflix and Disney Plus, and the remote includes Google’s required “Live TV” button for easy access to free and live streaming channels.

We thought the Google TV Streamer was “an upgrade in every way” over the Chromecast, but it also just about doubled the price, and not everyone wants a set-top box on display next to their TV. At €69 (around $78) the Cast 150 costs the same as Google’s 4K Chromecast used to, but it’s only going on sale in Europe, where it launches on May 28th. A UK launch will follow “eventually,” but a US release isn’t on the cards.
