An Alabama woman was arrested earlier ths month and charged with capital murder in the death of her infant daughter.

Morgan Skye Thornton, aged 35, was initially accused of aggravated child abuse after the child, who was “severely beaten and showed no signs of life,” was quickly taken to a hospital, where the boy ultimately passed away, according to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities reported that Thornton “appeared to be intoxicated,” prompting them to obtain search warrants for the residence and a blood sample from her. The results are still awaited.

Following the infant boy’s demise, the charge was elevated, and Thornton faced court, where she informed a WAFF reporter that she had “swaddled” the child and put him to sleep at 7 p.m., after which “something happened.”

Asked if she remembered what happened after that, she said, “Tried to give him CPR. That’s all.”

However, testimony during a preliminary hearing this week unveiled a different account. An investigator indicated that Thornton confessed to medics who arrived to assist the infant boy that she had assaulted him. She allegedly woke her husband, claiming she had just killed “a demon,” before showing him the baby’s blood-stained room.

The investigator noted that he reached the residence around 12:30 a.m. on August 1, finding Thornton outside, covered in blood, and discovered the baby in a blood-soaked room.

Thornton was ordered held without bond, and the judge sent her case to a grand jury.
