Torrid, a prominent women’s clothing brand based in California, has had to make the difficult decision to shutter over 150 of its stores across the country, marking another challenging chapter for physical retail outlets.
The brand, which is well-known for catering to plus-size women with sizes ranging from 10 to 30, closed 151 stores deemed “structurally unproductive” last year. This includes 77 locations that were shut down during the fourth quarter, as outlined in their recently released year-end report to shareholders.
The report did not specify the number of stores in California that are affected by these closures.

Founded in 2001 in the City of Industry, located in eastern Los Angeles, Torrid began its journey with a single store in the Brea Mall. Since then, it has grown into a nationwide brand, according to KTLA.
By early 2026, Torrid was operating 483 stores spanning all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico and Canada.
Despite these closures, Torrid’s CEO, Lisa Harper, expressed a positive outlook in the shareholder report, stating, “We enter 2026 with a strong operational foundation – optimized channels, product, and pricing.”
“This positions us to accelerate customer fille growth through renewed marketing efforts, helping us re-engage past shoppers, attract new customers and deepen loyalty across our existing base. I am confident we are on the right path and encouraged by early signs of progress we are seeing in the business.”

Last year proved a brutal one for many longtime retail staples.
Forever 21 and Rue21 shut down all of it remaining locations, while Claire’s, Carter’s, American Eagle Outfitters, Victoria’s Secret and Foot Locker closed dozens more.
