2 construction workers dead after being found unconscious in NYC stairwell: police

Two construction workers were discovered unconscious in a stairwell in Little Italy on Saturday afternoon and later pronounced dead. Despite the commotion on a sunny day in the famous neighborhood, onlookers seemed mostly indifferent as emergency crews removed the bodies.

The men, aged 35 and 34, were found inside an apartment building located at 118 Mulberry St. Police officers and paramedics arrived at approximately 3:45 p.m., according to information from the NYPD.

The younger man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Paramedics performed CPR on the older man as they took him out on a stretcher. This occurred in full view of diners and pedestrians near local spots such as Casa Bella and Manero’s Pizza, most of whom appeared largely unperturbed.

One woman, however, was visibly distraught after police arrived at the dismal scene.

The man was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he died, police said.

The cause of their deaths remains unknown.

The investigation is ongoing.
