VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — In a tragic incident at a British Columbia school, seven individuals lost their lives in a shooting, while an additional two fatalities were reported at a nearby residence, authorities in Canada confirmed on Tuesday. Among the deceased is a woman believed by police to be the shooter.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported that over 25 people sustained injuries, with two individuals in critical condition being airlifted to a hospital, following the shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

Incidents of school shootings are uncommon in Canada.

Situated over 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) north of Vancouver, Tumbler Ridge is nestled in the Canadian Rockies, close to the Alberta border. According to the provincial government, Tumbler Ridge Secondary School serves 175 students ranging from Grades 7 to 12.

British Columbia Premier David Eby stated that police officers arrived at the school within two minutes of being alerted.

A video showed students walking out of the school with their hands raised as police vehicles surrounded the building and a helicopter circled overhead.

Police found six people dead, a statement said. A suspect appeared to have died of a “self-inflicted injury.” An eighth person died while being transported to a hospital, and two more were found dead at a home the authorities believe was connected to the attack.

RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd told reporters that investigators had identified a female suspect but would not release a name, and that the shooter’s motive remained unclear. He added that police are still investigating how the victims are connected to the shooter.

Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka said the whole community is grieving.

“I broke down,” he said, saying it was “devastating” to learn how many had died in the community of 2,700, which he called a “big family.”
