In Philadelphia, a significant search and rescue mission is in progress following the collapse of a partially constructed parking garage. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has resulted in the tragic death of one person, while two others are still missing, according to Mayor Cherelle Parker.
The calamity unfolded near 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue in South Philadelphia, as the structure was undergoing construction. Mayor Parker expressed that first responders acted swiftly and decisively, launching immediate search and rescue operations. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life, and our efforts continue tirelessly to locate the missing individuals,” she stated on X late Wednesday. “Our resolve remains firm until every person is accounted for.”
The mayor further emphasized that the area is still an active scene for rescue operations. Consequently, the immediate vicinity, including the shopping plaza and nearby stores, remains closed, with no indication of when normalcy might return.
This tragic incident was reported to have occurred on April 8, 2026, when the parking garage in Philadelphia partially collapsed. The news was relayed by WTXF, highlighting the urgency and critical nature of the ongoing rescue mission.
Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson shared that two individuals were successfully rescued from the site and are currently receiving medical attention at a local hospital, as reported by FOX 29 Philadelphia. Commissioner Thompson also noted that before the rescue efforts can progress further, it is imperative to stabilize the remaining structure of the parking garage to ensure the safety of the rescue teams.

The station cited Parker as saying that eight permits were properly issued and all inspections were up to date, and that the collapse happened when a roof segment being installed by a subcontractor failed.

“Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is aware of a serious construction incident at our parking garage construction site on 3000 Grays Ferry Avenue in Philadelphia,” the organization told FOX 29. “We are prioritizing the safety of the construction workers at this time and working closely with the City of Philadelphia and our construction partners. We will share additional information as it becomes available.”
The identities of the deceased and missing were not immediately released.
“All of our prayers are with the family of the individual who has passed and the families of those we are still searching for tonight. I humbly ask all Philadelphians to join me in prayer for them,” Parker said on X.

“Lori and I are praying for those injured in the parking garage that partially collapsed in Grays Ferry today, for the family of the individual who was tragically killed, and for the families who continue to wait while first responders search for their loved ones,” added Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who said his administration is in touch with officials on the ground in Philadelphia.
