3 hikers, including 19-year-old, found dead on Southern California's Mount Baldy, sheriff's department says

In the scenic yet treacherous terrain of Mount Baldy, California, a tragic incident unfolded as three hikers lost their lives on Monday, confirmed by the local authorities.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported that their search and rescue team was dispatched following an alert about a 19-year-old hiker who suffered a 500-foot fall in the area known as Devils Backbone.

In a bid to seek help, the young hiker’s companion ventured to a location with cellular reception to alert authorities. This initiated a comprehensive search operation that included aerial support over the mountain region.

During the airborne reconnaissance, deputies located the injured teenager. Unexpectedly, they also discovered the bodies of two other hikers, who were not connected to the 19-year-old or his friend who sought assistance.

This unfortunate discovery of the additional hikers was unanticipated, as the search team was initially unaware of their presence in the vicinity.

The victims remain unidentified, while the teen’s friend, who managed to call for aid, escaped unscathed, according to officials.

The sheriff’s department said that due to severe winds, the helicopter was unable to safely complete the rescue. Then, at around 7:30 p.m., a Los Angeles County aircraft was used to help.

“High winds again prevented a hoist operation,” said the sheriff’s department. “However, an air medic was hoisted down and confirmed all three individuals were deceased. Due to severe winds, the helicopter was unable to safely complete the rescue.”

A recovery operation for all three hikers is underway.

This is a developing story. This article will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.
