A man tragically lost his life while riding a high-speed, unpermitted electric bicycle after he crashed into a barrier near the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan, authorities reported on Friday.

According to police, 32-year-old Jason Galindo was traveling north on his electric bike along First Avenue when he lost control and struck a barrier at East 45th Street in Midtown. The accident occurred around 10:03 p.m. on Tuesday.

Galindo sustained a critical head injury in the accident. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, authorities confirmed.

The model of Galindo’s bike, a HappyRun G100 Pro Electric Bicycle, can reach speeds up to 50 mph, as noted by law enforcement.

New York City regulations dictate that e-bikes, e-scooters, and pedal-assist bicycles must not exceed 15 mph on public roads.

An NYPD representative was unable to immediately provide information on why Galindo’s bicycle was not compliant with the city’s street laws.

Galindo resided in the Elmhurst section of Queens, said police.
