A hit-and-run incident on Jacksonville’s Northside has tragically claimed the life of a 24-year-old man. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the case, which unfolded early Tuesday morning.
The collision occurred around 5:54 a.m. at the junction of Gold Star Family Parkway and Pecan Park Road, as detailed by Sergeant Robert Hungerford from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The young man was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet S10 traveling eastbound on Gold Star Family Parkway, while a Chevrolet Silverado was heading westbound.
The crash was triggered when the driver of the Silverado executed a left turn onto Pecan Park Road, crossing into the path of the S10. This maneuver led to the fatal accident, according to Sgt. Hungerford.
Following the collision, the Silverado’s driver reportedly paused momentarily to attend to the injured man but then fled the scene. The victim was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of the driver to come forward, as they continue to seek justice for the young man and his grieving family.
According to Hungerford, the man was then taken to a local hospital where he died shortly after arriving.
After the collision, Hungerford said the driver of the Silverado got out of the vehicle and tended to the 24-year-old man “for a moment,” but then ran away from the scene. JSO’s K-9 and drone unit responded to the scene and searched the area “extensively,” but was unable to find the suspect, Hungerford said.
Hungerford said the suspect is described as a Hispanic male, who’s approximately 5-foot-6 tall with a medium build and short black hair. Hungerford also described the suspect as being in his late-20s/early-30s.
“We do have some leads and we expect to follow up on those today,” Hungerford said Tuesday. “We have a team of six detectives that have this as their primary duty for the foreseeable future.”
Hungerford said the intersection of Gold Star Family Parkway and Pecan Park Road was closed for several hours following the crash.
Anyone with information on the crash or suspect is asked to call JSO’s non-emergency number at 904-630-0500. To provide information anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
