Child drowns in the ocean on Fernandina Beach

The child died in the hospital Saturday after being rescued from the water off Seaside Park.

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — A tragic incident occurred when a five-year-old tragically lost their life by drowning in the ocean. The child died in the hospital on Saturday after being pulled from the water near Seaside Park by bystanders.

According to officials from the City of Fernandina Beach, lifeguards were alerted to a child in trouble just to the north of Seaside Park on Saturday, around 11:52 a.m.

The lifeguards quickly reached the child’s location. By the time first responders arrived, the child had already been brought out of the water, and life-saving actions were immediately initiated.

Fernandina Beach Fire Department EMS arrived on scene and took the young child to the hospital, where tragically, they died after suffering cardiac arrest, city officials said.

“Our thoughts are with the child’s family during this tragic time, and we are grateful for the quick actions of the bystanders, and for the rapid response and professionalism of our Ocean Rescue and Fire Department personnel,” city officials said in a statement.

The incident is under investigation.
