A West Milwaukee pizza factory worker was tragically killed after being crushed by a robotic machine on shift, authorities confirmed.

The individual, identified as 45-year-old Robert Cherone from Elkhorn, was working at the Palermo’s Pizza facility at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday when the tragic accident took place, according to reports.

Police and firefighters hurried to the plant following reports of an industrial accident, but despite their immediate life-saving attempts, Cherone was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities from the West Milwaukee Police Department stated that they are investigating the incident, with cooperation from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Details on how Cherone became trapped in the machinery remain unclear.

“The unfortunate accident that resulted in an employee’s death earlier today is a tragic event that is undergoing a thorough investigation,” Palermo’s spokesperson Rebecca Schimke commented in a statement on Wednesday.

“We are working in collaboration with government officials and collecting facts. Palermo’s is committed to supporting the employee’s family and relatives. In this challenging time, we will also provide counseling and support services to our team at Palermo’s.”
