(KTLA) – A 7-year-old girl was killed by a falling boulder at a popular ski resort in Lake Tahoe over the weekend, according to multiple media reports.

The March 29 incident happened at around 3:30 p.m. at Diamond Peak Ski Resort in Incline Village, Nevada, officials with the resort said in a statement posted to their website.

A large rock on a natural slope adjacent to Diamond Peak Lodge, where the girl, identified as Adelyn “Addie” Grimes of Reno, was climbing, came loose and struck the 7-year-old.

The resort’s medical services were alerted to a “non-skiing accident involving a child,” prompting an immediate response by Diamond Peak’s Ski Patrol, who provided first aid while they waited for first responders from the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, along with personnel from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said that despite the medical team’s best efforts, the girl succumbed to her injuries.

The resort offered its condolences to the grieving family and said that staff had been “deeply affected” and “profoundly saddened by the accident.”

The sheriff’s office said no foul play was involved in the accident, though they still planned to conduct an investigation, according to The Orange County Register.

Diamond Peak, located in the northeastern portion of Lake Tahoe, is approximately 30 miles south of Reno, Nevada.
