Landslide kills over 1,000 people and levels entire village in Sudan's Central Darfur

On Sunday, Aug. 31, a catastrophic landslide hit the village of Tarasin in Sudan’s Central Darfur, claiming the lives of at least 1,000 individuals, as reported by the rebel group managing the region.

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM-A) reported that the tragic event was caused by several days of heavy rainfall in late August and has “utterly destroyed the village.”

“Preliminary reports suggest the fatality of all the village’s residents, who are believed to number over one thousand. Only one individual survived,” stated the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army in a release.

Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi, called the landslide a “humanitarian tragedy.”

The group is calling for help from the U.N. and international aid agencies for assistance in recovering bodies and responding to the disaster.
