An 18-year-old Loyola University student was fatally shot early Thursday while walking with friends near Loyola Beach in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood, according to police reports.
The victim, identified by the university as Sheridan Gorman, was shot at approximately 1:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of West Pratt Boulevard.
Authorities stated that a male suspect approached the group on foot, brandished a firearm, and began shooting in their direction.

Tragically, Gorman was struck in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that no other individuals were injured in the incident.
Investigators have indicated that Gorman was not the intended target of the shooting.

Loyola released a statement in part saying, “This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out toSheridan’sfamily, loved ones, and all who knew her. We are in close contact with law enforcement as they investigate and work to understand the full circumstances of this tragedy. Based on the information available to us now, there is no ongoing threat to our campus community. We will continue to provide updates as confirmed information becomes available.”
Loyola said counseling services are available for students.
