ANGLETON, Texas (AP) — In a heartbreaking incident early Saturday near Angleton, Texas, two children lost their lives and two more were seriously injured in a shooting close to the Houston area, according to authorities.

The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office reported on Facebook that deputies responded to a shooting incident where they discovered two children, aged 13 and 4, who had been shot dead. Additionally, two other children, aged 8 and 9, were airlifted to a hospital and remained in critical condition.

Madison Polston, the sheriff’s public affairs officer, confirmed in an email later that day that the two injured children were fortunately now in stable condition.

A woman has been arrested in connection with the shooting, Polston said. Investigators were working to verify how the woman and children are related.

Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Authorities have not yet provided further information about the exact location of the shooting or what led to it. However, Polston mentioned that her department anticipated sharing more updates on Saturday evening.

“While we are still uncovering details, losing two children in such circumstances is truly tragic,” stated the sheriff’s office in their Facebook post. “Our hearts go out to the family and all affected as we continue gathering more information about this devastating event.”

Angleton, a city with a population of around 19,500, serves as the county seat for Brazoria County. It is situated approximately 45 miles (72 kilometers) south of Houston, within the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan region.
