DONALD Trump has said Elon Musk has gone completely “off the rails” after the Tesla CEO announced he was launching a new political party.
It comes after Elon Musk said on Friday that he had set up the America Party – in a bid to challenge the Republican and Democratic two-party system.
Trump criticized Musk’s decision to launch the America Party, stating that third parties usually fail in the U.S. and merely lead to “disruption and chaos”.
It’s unclear whether the party has been formally registered with US election authorities.
Even if Musk wanted to run for President, he wouldn’t be eligible under the US Constitution.
Only “natural born citizens” can hold the office, meaning those born in the US – but Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa.
Musk created a poll on his social media site X, questioning whether people “want independence from the two-party (some might say uniparty) system” that has controlled American politics for two hundred years.
The yes-or-no survey got more than 1.2 million responses.
He wrote on Saturday: “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!”
“Regarding bankrupting our nation through waste & graft, we exist in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is established to restore your freedom,” he expressed.
Besides criticising the America Party, Trump launched several other attacks on Musk in Truth Social post on Sunday.
He called Musk “off the rails” and a “train wreck” over the past five weeks.
Trump claimed Musk opposed the “Big, Beautiful Bill” because it eliminates the “ridiculous Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate”, which would have “forced” people to buy electric cars.
Lastly, Trump said Musk asked a close friend to run NASA, who the US president described as a “blue-blooded Democrat”.
Trump called this “inappropriate”, suggesting a conflict of interest given Musk’s own space business, SpaceX.
This follows a massive fallout between the US president and the world’s richest man over the new budget law.
Musk has claimed the “Big, Beautiful Bill” would bankrupt the US.
The bill promises multi-trillion dollar tax breaks, increased defence spending and funding for Trump’s mass deportations of undocumented migrants.
Musk, who campaigned to reduce the national debt, said in early June: “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination.
“Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.
“It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5trillion and burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.
“Congress is making America bankrupt.”
Musk’s attack of the bill came just days after he stepped down as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
