Updated 6/29/25 11:10 p.m. ET:

“This evening, the SWAT team found a male deceased on Canfield Mountain, with a firearm nearby,” stated a post from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s office on Sunday night.

It’s unclear if it’s the shooter and if the threat has been totally neutralized.

Original story:

The situation remains highly chaotic, leaving law enforcement unsure about the number of shooters involved, while they continue to face incoming sniper fire.

The FBI is rushing to the scene:

Unconfirmed reports indicate that nine firefighters and two police officers were shot during the attack. Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set to lure first responders to Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene.

The incident began Sunday afternoon, and authorities believe it might have been a set-up:

The incident unfolded at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time after a small but growing brush fire broke out on Canfield Mountain Sunday afternoon.

When fire personnel responded to the blaze about half an hour later, they started getting shot at by an unknown person, or persons, in the woods, officials said.

Norris said that the situation remains active and that authorities are currently taking fire from multiple directions on the mountain.

Civilians are also coming down off the mountain and could be stuck amid the blaze, Norris said.

Law enforcement is investigating whether the fire could have been intentionally set in order to lure first responders to the scene, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Howard told ABC News.
