In a ritzy enclave of South Florida, Chinese migrants are coming ashore via boat, leading to an investigation into human smuggling networks.

Coral Gables, a charming city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, is renowned for its Mediterranean Revival architecture, streets shaded by trees, and vibrant green spaces. Within this city, the Gables Estates neighborhood has been identified by Zillow as the priciest housing market in the nation.

But in recent months, the dazzling city has seen an uptick of Chinese migrant interceptions.

The city’s rise in popularity mirrors the increase in Chinese nationals moving to the Sunshine State since 2020, according to data gathered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. In 2020, Florida Border Protection officers encountered 406 Chinese migrants, and by 2024, this figure had risen to 723, reflecting a 78% growth.

now two-thirds of Chinese migrants coming into the U.S. are single men of military age, traveling alone, and claiming they don’t speak any English.

“Enhanced communication between state and national authorities regarding the allocation of resources and the enhancement of border technology, such as the deployment of surveillance drones and the upgrading of existing technology, is essential,” he suggested.
