A DESPERATE search is underway to find a Brit hiker who has been missing in New Zealand for days.

Eli Sweeting, 25, failed to return after a solo trip up the mile-high Mitre Peak near Milford Sound on Sunday.

A group of about 60 dedicated search and rescue volunteers, along with 10 police officers and helicopter support, has been tirelessly combing the area in search of the missing hiker.

But the search was paused earlier today due to bad weather and difficult terrain – and is expected to resume tomorrow.

Sweeting’s family are on their way out to assist with the search effort.

According to family friend Samantha Eastwell, 31, who spoke with MailOnline, “We are all just trying to remain hopeful. They keep spotting a light, so there’s uncertainty about whether he is still alive, and it’s frustrating that the search keeps getting halted due to the weather.”

“He loves the outdoors and has been residing in New Zealand for some time now. Although he was dressed suitably for the conditions, [his sister] Serena mentioned to me that Eli had only prepared for a one-night outing.”

“The whole family is very, very worried for him and are flying out there now.”

The missing hiker is is originally from Bristol and moved to New Zealand after graduating from the University of Derby.

Several people supported by helicopters have been working through the tricky terrain, according to police.

Detective Tracy Ward said: “There is also a huge amount of local support being provided by tourism operator Real NZ at Milford Sound.

“The search area is relatively contained but incredibly rugged and difficult to navigate once off the track.

“At times, the search teams are only able to progress 250 metres in an hour.

“While no items of interest have been positively linked to the missing man, a number of clues are being followed up on, and we remain hopeful that there will be a positive outcome.”

Sweeting had been working for a boat cruising company until recently, MailOnline has reported.

Detective Ward added: “The man we are looking for is experienced in the outdoors, and we believe he has suitable clothing and provisions, which can make all the difference.”

His sister Serena Sweeting said: “Being in the mountains and adventure is what my brother lives for and he spends lots of time preparing for these adventures and training.

“My brother is one of the kindest, most compassionate people in my life and he has always been there for me.

“He inspires me to live and get out of my comfort zone as well as listens and genuinely wants to know you and your story.

“Anybody who has met him will know what I mean. He has such a positive, vibrant and supportive energy.

“We just want him home safe.”
