BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Another Walker County deputy is set to plead guilty in connection to the death of Anthony Mitchell in 2023.
According to court documents, Carl Carpenter has entered into a plea agreement on two counts of depravation of rights.
According to the indictment, Carpenter allegedly stomped on Mitchell’s genitals while he was handcuffed on the ground following his arrest. Additionally, the grand jury claimed that both Carpenter and James Handley reportedly rammed Mitchell’s legs into the exterior of their patrol car and kicked him.
Carpenter is among many current and former employees at the sheriff’s office and jail charged in the death of Anthony “Tony” Mitchell. Carpenter initially entered a not guilty plea on March 20.
Since Mitchell’s death on January 26, 2023, nine former employees of the jail and a psychiatric nurse have pleaded guilty to crimes ranging from negligence to abuse.:
- Karen Kelly: Former deputy who was fired from the department after allegedly leaking footage of Mitchell being abused by deputies to the media. She pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law.
- Bailey Ganey: Former deputy who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to deprivation of rights. He was 22 years old at the time Mitchell died.
- Grayson Colin Woods: Former deputy who pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights.
- Heather Craig: Former deputy who pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights.
- Megan Johnson: Former deputy who pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights.
- Daniel Lee Allan Brown: Former deputy charged with one count of deprivation of rights.
- Daniel Wyers: A psychiatric nurse who was contracted to take care of inmates at the Walker County Jail. Wyers pleaded guilty to deprivation of rights.
- Courtlan Brent Jones: Former deputy who pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights.
- Joshua Conner Jones: Former deputy who pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy against rights and deprivation of rights.
- Benjamin Shoemaker: Former deputy who pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against rights and two counts of deprivation of rights.
The Mitchell family lawsuit remains pending in court.
