CHICAGO (WLS) — Authorities reported on Thursday that there have been incidents this week involving an unidentified man approaching women in a park on the North Side, following them, and engaging in inappropriate touching.

Ald. Andre Vasquez, who represents the 40th Ward, said the incidents took place in West Ridge Nature Park, located at 5801 N. Western Ave.

Chicago police officials confirmed they are investigating, and the Chicago Park District is aware, Vasquez said.

The Chicago Police Department stated that on Monday at approximately 10:15 p.m., a 53-year-old woman was physically assaulted by an unknown individual. Similarly, on Wednesday around 9:40 a.m., a 33-year-old woman was hit on her buttocks by an unidentified man.

In the midst of a lush urban sanctuary teeming with greenery, dazzling public art, and intriguing wildlife, nature enthusiasts responded to the unsettling news.

“It’s very disturbing,” Gabbie Lepse said. “It’s very sad.”

Lepse was among those visiting West Ridge Nature Park, a 21-acre area located off Western Avenue at the northwest border of Rosehill Cemetery. Following at least two worrying incidents this week, the public is being advised to remain watchful.

“As women, we often find ourselves having to constantly check our surroundings, and realizing there are individuals engaging in such uncomfortable behaviors is truly shocking,” Lepse remarked.

The offender in both cases this week fled immediately, police said.

“I will definitely inform my wife about this,” commented park visitor Mike Isaacs. “I hope it doesn’t deter people from visiting here. I just wish it makes them more careful.”

For Lepse, who came to the park with her baby, the incidents are more than concerning.

“This is a very beautiful nature park, and to know that like we can’t just be safe in a great community is saddening,” Lepse said.

Police have not released a description of the offender. There will be additional surveillance and police and park district staff in the area, Alderman Vasquez said.

Residents are encouraged to call 911 or 833-NAMI-CHI if they feel unsafe. Vasquez also highlighted the Chicago Rape Crisis Hotline at 1-888-293-2080 and Resilience Chicago.

No arrests have been made as Chicago police continue to investigate.
