A young man in his early 20s is recovering from injuries after being shot early Tuesday morning on Jacksonville’s Westside, as reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The incident, which occurred near Collins Road, began with a confrontation between the victim and the alleged shooter, a man in his early 40s. According to JSO Sgt. Christopher Smith, the suspect visited the victim at his residence on Cinnamon Lakes Drive to resolve a disagreement, which escalated into a physical altercation.
During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly shot the victim in the abdomen, explained Sgt. Smith.
Police officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after midnight, around 12:10 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered the injured man, who was promptly transported to a nearby hospital by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. Thankfully, his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Sgt. Smith noted that all individuals involved, including the suspect, are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Although no arrests have been made at this point, authorities are examining the possibility that the shooting might have been an act of self-defense.
All parties involved, including the suspect, were detained and are cooperating with the investigation, Smith said. No arrests have been made at this time, as Smith said investigators are reviewing whether the shooting may have been done in self-defense.
Smith further told First Coast News the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and poses no threat to the community.
