The Righteous Gemstones is now in its fourth season, which is the upside. The downside, however, is that this is also the last season. The highly underrated comedy, crafted by and featuring Danny McBride, centers on the challenges faced by the Gemstone siblings — Jesse (McBride), Judi (Edi Patterson), and Kelvin (Adam Devine) — as they navigate personal relationships and strive to maintain a positive image for their megachurch community after their father Eli (John Goodman) steps down.
The show originally premiered on HBO before transitioning to what is now MAX in 2020. It has released its recent seasons on a steady schedule, with Season 2 debuting in early 2022, and Season 3 arriving in June 2023. The current and final season began on March 9th, with the series finale set to air on May 4th.
The series primarily takes place in South Carolina, and that’s exactly where the show has been filmed for all of its seasons.
A casting call was issued in September 2024, inviting locals to participate as background actors and stand-ins during filming in Columbia. The series has also shot scenes at multiple sites in Charleston, such as the Citadel Mall (which represents the Gemstones’ church), The North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center, and Aviation Square Shopping Mall.
Other locations in South Carolina that were also filming locations include Saint Phillips Island, Mount Pleasant, Ridgeville, and West Ashley.
The Righteous Gemstones is available to stream on MAX for $9.99/month. 4 episodes out of 9 are out right now, with episodes releasing every Sunday at 10 PM ET/PT.
