A 32-year-old man has been arrested following the discovery of his parents’ bodies in their Los Angeles residence.

WASHINGTON — Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, was apprehended in connection with the deaths of his father and stepmother, Michele Singer Reiner. This information was confirmed by a law enforcement official on Monday to The Associated Press.

The bodies of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were discovered on Sunday at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles.

Nick Reiner was detained by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department early Monday and charged with a felony. According to jail records, he is being held on a $4 million bail. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.

Rob and Michele Reiner are survived by three children: Romy, 28, Nick, 32, and Jake, 34. Rob also has an adopted daughter, Tracy Reiner, 61, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.

Who is Nick Reiner?

Nick, the younger son of Rob Reiner, has been open about his battle with addiction. By the age of 18, he had experienced multiple stints in nine different rehabilitation centers, coupled with periods of homelessness and relapses.

Nick, the younger of Rob Reiner’s two sons, spoke publicly of his struggles with addiction. By 18, he had cycled in and out of nine treatment facilities with bouts of homelessness and relapses in between.

In 2015, Nick co-wrote the film “Being Charlie,” which was loosely based on his real-life struggles with drug addiction and homelessness. His dad directed the movie, later calling it the most personal project of his career in an interview on “WTF With Marc Maron.”

In an interview with PEOPLE in 2016, Nick openly discussed battling addiction from his early teens, cycling through rehab programs beginning at age 15 and spending long stretches homeless in several states after refusing further treatment.

“If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless,” Nick said at the time.

“I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas,” he added, explaining that he eventually returned home and began rebuilding his life.

Nick has said his relationship with his father was complicated during those years but improved as he achieved sobriety. Rob Reiner previously praised his son, calling him “the heart and soul” of “Being Charlie.”

He added that at the time of production, his relationship with Nick had changed for the better. “To be honest, by the time we got to the point of making the movie…our relationship had gotten so much closer.”
