Whoopi Goldberg Empathizes With ‘Bridgerton’ Star Yerin Ha On ‘The View’: “People Make You Feel Like You Shouldn’t Be in a Romantic Relationship With a White Guy”

Yerin Ha received invaluable advice from Whoopi Goldberg during her appearance on The View this morning.

Ha, alongside her Bridgerton co-star Luke Thompson, joined the hosts of the Hot Topics Table on Monday, just days ahead of the eagerly anticipated Season 4 premiere on Netflix. Ha, who takes on the role of Sophie in the new season, is not only starring in her first romantic lead but also making history as the series’ first East-Asian lead. When Sara Haines inquired about the “imposter syndrome” Ha faced during this journey, the actress opened up.

Originally from Australia, Ha revealed she “never envisioned [herself] in a romantic lead role,” which partly motivated her decision to move to Korea for her studies. She admitted, at the time, she “didn’t believe [she] could sustain a career” in the entertainment industry either in Australia or Hollywood.

“It’s something I constantly grapple with,” Ha confessed. “Perfectionism drives me, and the desire to excel so I can pave the way for others and inspire the new generation. It’s about doing well, but that also comes with its own set of pressures.”

Whoopi Goldberg addressed Ha’s concerns, adding, “Sometimes people make you feel like you’re out of place in a romantic relationship with a white guy. Let’s be real. I’ve experienced that. You’ll be just fine.”

Ha expressed her gratitude for Goldberg’s comforting words, to which Ana Navarro humorously added, “She’s talking about real life, by the way.”

Nonetheless, Goldberg continued connecting with Ha, explaining that “people will always try to make you feel like their idea of what it is is all that there is.”

“When you read a book, the book sort of gives you guidelines,” she added. “But when you make a film, we actors can do anything. So if you’re playing someone in love, that’s what you’re playing.”

Ha agreed, “Exactly, yeah. Period.”

Goldberg reiterated, “You’re fine.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC. Bridgerton Season 4, Part 1 premieres on Thursday, Jan. 29 on Netflix.
