Why are flags in Georgia at half-staff on today? (May 15)

Flags at all government buildings and grounds in Georgia will be flown at half-staff Thursday. Here’s why

MACON, Ga. — In honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has directed that flags at all state buildings and grounds be flown at half-staff on Thursday to pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have died while on duty.

Kemp signed an executive order on Tuesday ordering the flags flown at half-staff on Thursday.

“Many of Georgia’s courageous men and women, working in various capacities within law enforcement, heed the call ‘To Protect and Serve’ their communities, putting their lives at risk to ensure public safety,” stated the executive order.

The executive order also emphasized that this decision aims to ensure the citizens of Georgia acknowledge the sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel throughout Central Georgia.

“It is imperative that all citizens are aware of and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices made by our law enforcement officers who work for the betterment of their communities,” according to the executive order.

The order applies only to state buildings and grounds in the state, but it applies to both the flag of the State of Georgia and the U.S. flag as well.

“On Peace Officer Memorial Day, it is proper and fitting to honor the brave men and women who offer their lives in the pursuit of excellence and the protection of life and property,” the executive order said.
