The 19-year-old victim was at the party when a group showed up and started a confrontation, authorities reported. Although the group initially left the premises, they returned in their vehicles, fired shots, and hit the young man in the upper body.
Despite efforts from sheriff’s deputies and paramedics to assist the victim, who was from Round Lake, he was declared dead at the location. His name has not been made public yet.
The group who initiated the dispute fled, but detectives later tracked down the vehicle involved at the home of 18-year-old Yurem Mejia-Gomez in Round Lake Beach, located on Meadow Green Lane.
Officials were informed that the firearm might be at a residence in Round Lake Beach. Although the firearm was not immediately found during the search, an explosive detection dog named Zack indicated its presence in a parked car. Police recovered the suspected weapon and ammunition from that vehicle.
Mejia-Gomez is believed by investigators to be the shooter and is now facing charges that include two counts of First-Degree Murder and one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm. He is expected to appear in court on Sunday morning.
