In 1985, she became the first female corporal to train recruits at Kapooka.

Giving evidence at the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, Ms Sillett told a Sydney hearing: “Because I was gay, I was a national threat.”

“The Sergeant then said the words, ‘Stop beating around the bush, we have reason to believe that you are homosexual,'” she said.

“At this time I was shocked and was losing everything before my very eyes.

“There was no empathy, there was no sympathy, there was just throwing questions at me.

“I was in there for approximately three hours and I got treated like a criminal.”

The Army policy was changed in 1992 under Prime Minister Paul Keating.

“I can’t understand and I still don’t understand that policy,” she said.

Ms Sillett hopes speaking out will enact change and she is fighting for a national apology and compensation for veterans.
