Poll reveals how many Americans believe the US should support Ukraine

Americans remain deeply divided over the United States’ role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, especially as President Donald Trump prepares for a pivotal meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This division is highlighted by a recent poll.

According to an exclusive survey conducted by the Daily Mail and J.L. Partners involving 1,000 registered voters, 41 percent of respondents believe that the U.S. should continue its involvement in diplomatic efforts, while 39 percent feel that Washington should reduce its engagement.

Additionally, 20 percent of those surveyed expressed uncertainty, underscoring the lack of a clear consensus among the American public as the conflict approaches its fourth year.

The discord extends across political affiliations, even among Republicans. Supporters of Trump are almost evenly split, with 43 percent in favor of ongoing U.S. involvement, while 42 percent are against it.

This poll was released ahead of Zelensky’s confirmation of his upcoming meeting with Trump in Florida on Sunday, a part of a ramped-up U.S.-led diplomatic initiative aimed at resolving the conflict.

Zelensky indicated that the discussions will cover security assurances for Ukraine and a proposed 20-point peace plan, which he noted is “about 90 percent ready.”

An economic agreement is also expected to be discussed, though Zelensky cautioned it remains unclear whether anything will be finalized during the meeting.

Ukraine is also expected to raise territorial issues. Moscow has insisted Kyiv relinquish the remaining territory it holds in the eastern Donbas region, an ultimatum Ukraine has repeatedly rejected.

The new polling suggests Americans remain skeptical that the negotiations will result in lasting peace, and on whether Trump should continue driving talks to end the conflict.

The polling was released as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed he will meet former President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday, amid an intensified U.S.-led diplomatic push to end the conflict.

In the exclusive poll, thirty-six percent of voters said it would be acceptable for Ukraine to give up territory currently occupied by Russia in exchange for binding security guarantees and neutrality. In comparison, 31 percent said such a deal would be unacceptable.

Support dropped sharply for broader concessions.

Just 26 percent said it would be acceptable for Ukraine to give up additional territory not currently under Russian control, while 41 percent said that outcome would be unacceptable.

Views were similarly divided on sanctions: 31 percent said lifting sanctions on Russia as part of a peace deal would be acceptable, compared with 33 percent who said it would be unacceptable, with the remainder undecided.

By contrast, Americans showed clearer support for continued US involvement in Israel-Palestine negotiations, with 45 percent backing ongoing engagement and 36 percent opposing it, underscoring how uniquely polarizing Ukraine remains among voters.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Since then, Moscow has seized most of the Luhansk region and about 70 percent of Donetsk, the two areas that make up the Donbas.

Fighting continues along multiple fronts. Recent Russian aerial bomb and drone strikes killed civilians in cities including Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Mykolaiv.

Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian energy infrastructure in response, including a strike this week on a major oil refinery in Russia’s Rostov region using UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles.

The polling was conducted by J.L. Partners between December 20 and 21 among a nationally representative sample of registered voters. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
