Last month, Commander, a four-month-old purebred German shepherd puppy, joined the Bidens in the White House.
Since then, the Bidens announced a new addition to their family on January 28, 2022.
Are the Biden’s getting a new pet?
On Friday, the Biden administration announced that the first family had adopted Willow, a gray shorthair tabby cat.
After Willow interrupted a speech first lady Jill Biden was making at a Pennsylvania farm during President Biden’s 2020 campaign, it appears that was the driving force behind the adoption.
“Willow made quite an impression on Dr. Biden in 2020 when she jumped up on the stage and interrupted her remarks during a campaign stop. Seeing their immediate bond, the owner of the farm knew that Willow belonged with Dr. Biden,” Michael LaRosa, the first lady’s spokesman, said.
Jill first teased the news of the cat’s pending arrival in September 2020 during an interview with Fox 5 in Washington DC, saying: “I’d love to get a cat. I love having animals around the house.”
What happened with the Biden dogs at the White House?
Champ, the Bidens’ oldest dog, died in June, and Major, who they acquired from an animal shelter in 2018, was rehomed after struggling to adjust to the hectic White House lifestyle.
Following Major’s rehoming, the Bidens welcomed Commander in December 2021.
“Welcome to the White House, Commander,” Biden tweeted at the time with a photo of the new puppy with a ball in his mouth.
When they moved into the White House, Major and Champ had some trouble adjusting to their new environment.
Major struggled to acclimatize after coming in and allegedly bit Secret Service agents “every day for a week.”
One event even necessitated medical assistance.
Major departed the White House after a series of events and now lives with a Biden family member.
How many times has a cat lived into the White House?
As of 2022, nine cats have been residents of the White House. Apart from Biden and Willow, here are the lucky felines and their owners:
- President Abraham Lincoln: Tabby and Dixie
- President Rutherford B. Hayes: Siam
- President Theodore Roosevelt: Slippers and Tom Quartz
- President Calvin Coolidge: Tiger, Blacky, Bounder, Timmie, and a bobcat named Smokey
- President Gerald Ford: Shan Shein
- President Jimmy Carter: Misty Malarky Ying Yang
- President Bill Clinton: Socks
- President George W. Bush: India “Willie” Bush
The first president to bring a cat inside the White House was Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward gave him Tabby and Dixie.
Lincoln was a cat person, and while visiting General Grant during the Civil War, he even rescued three motherless kittens.
During his presidency, he routinely played with cats to ease tension, which is still a popular de-stressing practice among cat enthusiasts today.

India “Willie” Bush, George W. Bush’s lovely family cat, was the last cat to reside in the White House before Willow Biden.
This cat, according to 9lives.com, spent her days at the presidential library and had her own webpage.
She would also occasionally appear in “Barneycam” films of the president’s dog Barney.
