There aren’t many moments when I find myself feeling a twinge of envy towards President Donald Trump, given the burdensome responsibilities of his role. However, last Friday was an exception. I found myself longing to be in the Oval Office when the legendary 1980 U.S. Men’s Hockey team, known for their “Miracle on Ice” victory, received a special tribute.
The White House shared a video on X featuring President Trump as he signed the Congressional Gold Medal Act (H.R. 452) into law. Surrounding him were 13 members of the iconic team, donning white cowboy hats reminiscent of their attire during the opening ceremonies of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.
The post accompanying the video read: “President Donald Trump honors the 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice’ U.S. Men’s Hockey team.” It highlighted the team’s remarkable achievement during the Cold War era, where they surpassed all expectations by defeating the formidable USSR, despite having no Olympic or professional experience.
“This is very exciting. This is one of the greatest moments in the history of U.S. sports,” Trump remarked. “I wouldn’t say, maybe, for other countries, they weren’t so thrilled. But for U.S. sports, and we have a very exciting team of champions standing behind me right now.”
Trump then invited a White House attorney to read the bill aloud. The document revealed that Congress had authorized the creation of three commemorative medals to honor the U.S. Men’s Hockey Team’s astounding triumph over the Soviet Union at the Lake Placid Olympics, forever remembered as the “Miracle on Ice.”
