Men put off doctor visits to keep sprits up during festive season - but health takes a hit

A recent report reveals that over half of men have dismissed potential health concerns, both physical and mental, leading to more serious issues for 40% of those surveyed. Conducted among 5,000 men across the UK, the study highlights that a third notice a decline in their health typically during December.

Interestingly, one in five men consciously avoids doctor visits during the festive period, preferring not to disrupt holiday preparations or dampen spirits. This avoidance coincides with a general neglect of health, as 23% of men are less inclined to exercise, 63% indulge in more food, and 40% consume more alcohol than usual during the holiday season.

The report was commissioned by Essity, a company keen on promoting health awareness. Essity is introducing a ‘Health on the Shelf’ initiative across its five UK production facilities in Prudhoe, Manchester, Stubbins, Oakenholt, and Skelmersdale. These health stations will offer checks for blood pressure, heart rate, stress levels, and cardiovascular disease risks.

Gareth Lucy, a spokesperson for Essity, emphasized the company’s proactive stance: “We are taking steps to ensure our employees receive comprehensive health evaluations before the holiday season kicks in.”

In observance of Men’s Health Month this November, Essity is providing complimentary health assessments to all employees, aiming to remind them of the significance of addressing health concerns promptly and reinforcing the message of self-care.

The report also notes that 15% of men cannot recall the last time they had a general health check-up, with 17% admitting it has been over three years. Despite this, 45% currently have physical health concerns, while 39% are worried about their mental health.

More than half (54%) said their first instinct with anything that may be medically wrong is to ignore it and hope it goes away by itself.

This ‘bury your head in the sand’ attitude to health is largely because 47% of men hope the problem will go away by itself, and 29% admit they would be worried about the diagnosis.

A further 26% blame a lack of time for ignoring their own health, and 23% are too embarrassed to pursue help.

The report discovered older men were more likely to feel they have a handle on their physical and mental state, and felt more confident to address issues as and when they arise. In contrast, men aged 18 to 24 are most likely to ignore their mental health issues.

Gareth Lucy, for Essity, added: “It’s worrying to think there are so many men out there quietly coping with a physical or mental health problem, without seeking any help at all.

“It is important men realise that it is completely acceptable to talk about health issues with others, and that quick thinking and quick action can often alleviate concerns very quickly.”
