Jurgen Klopp has clarified his recent comments about Burnley, insisting that he did not intend to insult the town ahead of Liverpool’s Boxing Day trip to Turf Moor.

The remarks in question were made during a Q&A session as part of a test event for the expanded Anfield Road stand.

When asked about his Christmas plans in front of 7,000 supporters, Klopp mentioned driving to Burnley and sarcastically referred to it as a ‘great place to celebrate Christmas.’

The comments were interpreted as a dig about the town of Burnley, with fans reacting negatively to the German boss’ comments.

Since coming under fire for his Burnley quips, Klopp has clarified the intention of his comments.

‘Obviously I know when we play Burnley but in that specific moment I didn’t have the schedule and he said Burnley and I said, “Oh, great place to be”.

‘If he would have said London, I would say great place to be; if he would have said Fiji, I would’ve said great place to be, because we play football there and I wouldn’t have been with my family.’

Klopp continued, admitting that Burnley give Liverpool ‘hard fights’ at Turf Moor ahead of the Premier League clash.

‘Do I always enjoy being in the stadium? No, because they gave us hard fights, that’s it.
