ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Elizabethton City Council discussed the Cruise In dates for 2025 at the council’s Thursday night meeting.

Mayor Bill Carter mentioned that after thorough deliberation, the city has chosen to align with the community’s desires by moving the Cruise In event to East Street instead of keeping it on Elk Avenue in downtown.

Despite some downtown business owners expressing concerns that this change might adversely affect their operations, most entrepreneurs present at the meeting acknowledged the necessity of the relocation. Nevertheless, a few events will still take place on Elk Avenue.

The Cruise In will be held every Saturday on East Street beginning Aug. 2 through Nov. 1, with one all-day event starting at 7 a.m. on Aug. 23.

The following dates will be hosted on Elk Avenue:

  • Aug. 2
  • Sept. 6
  • Oct. 11
  • Nov. 1
  • Aug. 23

“We considered numerous surveys and community voices presented here tonight,” Carter noted. “As citizens pointed out, there was a sentiment that Elk Avenue, our main thoroughfare and commercial hub, was becoming too congested. East Street, which runs parallel to Elk Avenue, seemed a fitting alternative. Therefore, we made the decision to shift the car show over by one block to East Street.”

Carter said he hopes that the city will respond positively to the “small change.”

“We’re happy to say that we can still provide that space,” he said. “And I trust that the Car Club will be all right with that. I know it’s a last-minute change for them, but based on the overall consensus of the community, a small change was due. And we did what we think is a small change to us.”
